The Home Office has published a consultation on proposals to amend the 2001 regulations made under the Misuse of Drugs Act. The document also covers proposals
not to implement (at least yet) two outstanding Shipman Inquiry recommendations: standardised requisition forms for all health professionals and a mandatory requirement to keep a running balance in the CD register. Consultation closes 28th October 2011

DH response to value based pricing consultation

The DH has published its response to the consultation on value based pricing. The next step is essentially to devise a system to define what represents value. Value based pricing is intended to replace the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS) when the current arrangements expire at the end of 2013

Consultation on EU guidelines on medicines distribution

The European Commission has issued a consultation on guidelines on medicines distribution. These aim to take account of the amendments in Directive 2011/62/EU to substantive Directive 2001/83/EC, including arrangements to prevent the entry into the legal supply chain of “fasified medicinal products”. Consultation closes on 31st December 2011 with a view to implementation 6 months after publication of final guidelines

Vision for NHS Commissioning Board

A vision for the role, orgnisation, structure and operating process for the proposed NHS Commissioning Board has been published by the DH. Subject to the passage of the amended Health and Social Care Bill (see June postings), the NHS CB should be established from October 2012 and fully operational by April 2013.

Additional advice on supply of specials

The RPS has added guidance to its original advice on the supply of specials (medicines). This includes advice on how to split or crush solid dose medication and which medicines should not be modified in this way. Guidance only available to members of RPS.

Changes to supply of medicines to podiatrists

The RPS has issued practice guidance covering changes to the supply of medicines to podiatrists which came into force on the 1st July. In addition the guidance offers some notes on wholesale supply of medicines and how to identify and check the registration of a podiatrist. Guidance only available to members of the RPS.

Consultation on GPhC equality scheme

The GPhC has opened a consultation on its proposed equality scheme. This is essentially about how the GPhC demonstrates adherence to equality, diversity and inclusion principles in the work it carries out. The consultation closes on 30th September 2011.

NHS reorganisation revisited

CHRE performance review published

The CHRE has published a performance review covering the nine health professional regulators that it oversees. Recommendations include allowing self-declaration of health status at registration rather than requiring a doctor’s certificate, developing electronic case management, expedition in dealing with fitness to practise cases and requiring a medical examination in cases involving drink or drug dependency.

Role of NPSA expanded

Despite the fact that the future of NPSA is uncertain under the Arm’s Length Bodies review, its role is expanded by amending Directions which require it to provide more advice and guidance on patient safety and to clinical assessments and research associated with patient safety.
