GMC Consultation: Good Practice in Prescribing
Sunday, April 10th, 2011
A consultation from the GMC appears to imply that as long as off-label or unlicensed medicines are prescribed in accordance with “best clinical practice” and the prescriber is adequately insured, it may not be necessary to inform the patient about the status of the medicines prescribed. This seems contrary to general principles of patient consent and autonomy, as well as partnership and collaboration between patient and prescriber. There are also implications for the liability of supplying pharmacists and administering nurse (perhaps). Consultation closes 27th May 2011.
