Section 10 (7) Medicines Act to be repealed

With effect from July 2012, section 10 (7) of the Medicines Act will be repealed. This currently provides exemption for registered pharmacies from the need to hold a wholesale dealer’s licence if they trade in medicines under certain circumstances. The MHRA has published guidance on the implications of this repeal

GPhC consults on changes to its Rules

The GPhC has issued a consultation on draft amendments to its existing Rules on Statutory Committees and their Advisers, Fitness to Practise and Disqualification and Registration Rules. Consultation closes on 12th July 2012.

Independent prescribers and CDs

New legislation (SI 2012 No 973) amends the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 to allow an independent nurse or pharmacist prescriber to prescribe CDS other than for the management of addiction. Comes into force 23rd April 2012.

Law Commission consults on regulator review

The Law Commission has published a consultation on its proposals to produce a single statute covering the regulation of all health and social care professionals, including the CHRE, the GPhC and the PSNI. The consultation closes on 31st May 2012.

Consultation on GPhC fees

The GphC has published a consultation on proposals for fees from October 2012. They propose a 10% reduction for registrants’ renewal fees; other fees, including those for premises, will remain at current level. Consultation closes 8th May 2012.

Consultation on HealthWatch Membership

The DH has issued a consultation on draft regulations for the membership of HealthWatch England which will be an independent statutory committee of CQC (Care Quality Commission). HealthWatch, and local HealthWatch groups advising Local Authorities, are the latest incarnation of mechanisms for the involvement of patients and the public in the operation and quality of the NHS in England. Consultation closes 2nd March 2012

CHRE consultation: Standards for NHS governance

The CHRE (Council for Regulatory Healthcare Excellence) is consulting on draft standards for members of NHS Boards and governing bodies in England. This is a further part of the Government’s NHS reforms to establish greater accountability and standards of behaviour and competence in those who manage the NHS in England. Consultation closes on 10th April 2012
