GPhC standards are published

Under the draft Pharmacy Order 2009, the GPhC has power to set standards. Consultation is open on five sets of standards: A – Pharmacy owners and superintendents; B1, B2 and B3 – Conduct, ethics and performance;C – Proficiency; D1, D2 and D3 – Education and training; E1 – Continuing Professional Development and E2 – Return to Practise. The consultation is carried on the CHRE website and closes on 12th January 2010.

Publication of GPhC Constitution

DH consultation on the future constitution of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) with draft of proposed legislation. Covers membership, removal, suspension of Council members, appointment of chair and Chief Executive and procedure rules. Consultation closes 25th November 2009.

Responsible Pharmacist Rules Implemented

New law: The Medicines (Pharmacies) (Responsible Pharmacist) Regulations 2008 (SI No 2789) come into force on 1st October 2009. These are made under amendments to the Medicines Act replacing “personal control” and making explicit the duties of the Responsible Pharmacist. In addition the RPSGB has issued standards and a toolkit. The DH has also issued DH guidance.

Consultation on PGDs for dental support staff

Consultation (MLX 362) from MHRA on proposals to amend medicines legislation to enable dental hygienists and dental therapists to sell, supply or administer medicines under a Patient Group Direction (PGD). Consultation ends November 20th 2009.

Emergency pharmacy registration enabled

New law: The Medicines (Pharmacies) (Applications for Registration and Fees – Amendment) Regulations 2009 (SI No 2502) allow RPSGB and PSNI to fast-track registration of additional pharmacies during a flu outbreak, and to waive all or part of the fees.

England NHS contract amended

New law: The NHS (Miscellaneous Ammendments Relating to Community Pharmaceutical Services and Optometrist Prescribing) Regulations 2009 (SI No 2205) bring in a series of amendments to application processes, pharmacy hours, inducements, etc for the NHS Community Pharmacy Framework in England. A National Care Service

A “green paper”: Cm 7673 – Shaping the Future of Care Together – sets outs problems and possible solutions for a National (Social) Care Service in England. This will also delineate those aspects of care which fall to the NHS to fund. Consultation closes on 13th November 2009.
